Lauryn Hill INTERNATIONAL recording artistes Lauryn Hill, Ne-Yo and Denyse Williams headline this year’s staging of the charity concert organised by diamond-selling reggae artiste Shaggy. Shaggy and Friends 2011 unfolds on the grounds of Jamaica House on Friday, December 30, with the artiste promising a wonderful experience at the concert which seeks to raise funds for the Bustamante Hospital for Children in Kingston. Thus far artistes on the lineup are Stephen Marley, Chino, Romain Virgo, Assassin aka Agent Sasco, Half Pint, Wayne Marshall, Tami Chynn, Cocoa Tea and soca’s first couple Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann Lyons from Trinidad. This year, the proceeds from the concert will help to furnish the new cardiac centre and intensive care unit at the island’s lone paediatric hospital. The Shaggy Foundation will work in partnership with Chain of Hope, a group of volunteer doctors and nurses who perform surgeries each year on Jamaica’s children with heart disease. When speaking of the international artistes for this year’s show, Shaggy was really excited. “Ne-Yo was a real no-brainer, once I mentioned it, he was on board. Lauryn Hill and I were on tour in Australia two months ago and we began discussing it then. Deniece Williams is also excited about performing for Jamaicans,” he disclosed. ‘Mr Boombastic’ also noted that this year he is not setting a target for the amount of money he would like to raise, needless to say he wants to continue the tradition the concert series has established over the years. To date, the Shaggy and Friends Make A Difference foundation have raised a total of Ja$57,000,000. The entertainer’s involvement with the Bustamante Hospital dates back to 2001, when he visited a friend’s son who had been admitted there. He was moved by the needs of the institution and made a resolve to support them in any possible way. He spent the next eight or so years fulfilling that resolve in a personal way with periodic donations, a process that eventually led, in 2009, to the event. This year there will be three ticket levels… Platinum, $25,000; Gold, $10,000 and Silver $5,000. At yesterday’s show, three major sponsors handed over their financial contributions towards the staging of the event. Scotiabank contributed $5 million, KFC presented a cheque for $1 million, while LIME committed $7.7 million towards the cause. Source : The jamaica Observer you may also like :

[Contributor : Shamari] Usain Bolt is the 2011 World Male Athlete of the year, becoming only the second man in history to win the prestigious award on three occasions. Australian sprint hurdler Sally Pearson was also presented with the Female World Athlete of the year award at last night’s International Athletics Foundation Grand Gala, which was held at the Salle des Etoiles in Monaco. Bolt, who won ahead of countryman Yohan Blake and Kenyan 800m specialist David Rudisha was happy with the award and says it will serve as motivation for the upcoming season. “I am extremely proud of myself this means a lot to me and it has motivated me even more to work harder and to enter this coming season with even greater fight,” Bolt told The Gleaner. The double world record holder won the 200m at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea earlier this year with the fifth fastest time in history, while also posting the fastest time for the year over 100m, 9.76 seconds. Bolt was also a member of Jamaica’s world record breaking 4x100m relay team from Daegu. Pearson, the world 100m hurdles champion, is hoping that her success can inspire athletes from her region and help to push the sport forward. “Its pretty amazing because we struggle in Australia with our sport so when I can do this for my country and my region it means a lot and hopefully it can inspire other athletes from my region at the junior level and senior level,” said the Pearson. The Australian won in Daegu with the fastest time in 19 years – 12.28; also setting a national and area record in the process. She won 15 of her 16 races over the last season, getting the nod over Valerie Adams (New Zealand) and Vivian Cheruiyot (Kenya). In 2006, the artiste released Money-O while signed to Greensleeves Records. However, the deal was cut short due to the company's closure. Years later, Macka Diamond says she is taking on the task of doing her album on her own with VP Records as the distributor. Macka Diamond, whose real name is Charmaine Munroe, says this new effort is completely different from the first. "The previous one was good too enuh. At the time I was signed to Greensleeves and it got a lot of help. But this one is my own production. It has a lot of songs that will do well in Jamaica and abroad," she told THE STAR. "I think this is a step that will take my career to another level. This set of work I am doing is going to go further than just Jamaica. Some of the songs that I am doing now are likely to get a break internationally," she said. One such song is You Like It on the popular 'Overproof' rhythm, which is a collaboration with Devina Burn. According to Macka Diamond, the song might possibly 'break' her in the US market, "but I know I am going to do well in Europe and the islands." The album already has popular songs like Too Much Bull, Flashing Lights and Cowfoot. The 14-track album will also have exclusives like Splice Dem with Unicorn and Redemption Paradise which is a collaboration with Tarrus Riley, Lady G, Barbee and Duane Stephenson. Macka Diamond says the album is already available on some music websites and will be on iTunes by November 8. However, the hardcopy will not be released until January, at which point the album will officially be launched. "It's already selling and it's doing well. I am just asking the fans to support the album because it's going to be well worth it," Macka Diamond said. Meanwhile, she says the video for You Like It will be shot in another two weeks. She also said she was preparing for the busy Christmas season that will include shows in French Guiana and Canada. In addition, Macka Diamond says her birthday celebration in January will be held in Kingston, Mandeville and Montego Bay.
