No other 20th-century artist so dominated an entire genre. The drawback of Marley's ubiquity is that roots reggae can feel like a fossilized sound that peaked in the late 1970s and disappeared with Marley in 1981. The subsequent rise of Jamaican dancehall and digital production didn't help its case for modernity, nor did its Rastafarian wariness of Western culture, a.k.a. Babylon. But roots reggae's pulse never died out. It slowed, there's no doubt about that, but like the British in 1939, it kept calm and carried on. For the past 15 years, its most distinct torchbearer has been Vaughn Benjamin, leader of St. Croix's Midnite. Benjamin is Rastafari through and through, and seems less concerned with pop hits than with spreading messages of peace and unity. On paper, that sincerity and devotion can feel quaint, but like all things zen, you need to meet it halfway to truly appreciate it. Once you do, Benjamin's incantations are captivating. For Midnite's new album, Kings Bell, Benjamin traveled to Marley's Tuff Gong Studio in Kingston, Jamaica, and worked with some of the island nation's best session musicians. It's the first time Midnite has recorded in reggae's homeland, and the new digs appear to provided a shot in the arm. While Benjamin's words and delivery still feel like monastic chants, the riddims here are more upbeat than those in much of the Midnite catalog. For example, the single "Mongst I & I" — which highlights the Rastafarian belief that we're all one under Jah, hence "I and I" — might be the catchiest song Benjamin has ever written. This all makes Kings Bell a great entry point for those new to Midnite's music. If you like what you hear, there's a lot more to explore — Benjamin has released more than two dozen albums since 1997. It's a worthy rabbit hole for reggae fans who want a little flesh and bone with their blood and fire. Popcaan counteracted the song with Dem Sell Wi Out and the two have been silent on the subject since. However, Ryno has recently recorded a song called Gaza Beating Stick, where he challenges Popcaan to a lyrical battle. In the song, Ryno sings, 'When yu si mi yu run like three likkle pig ... how badman fi name Popcaan ... him a country man from him born, put yu pon a country bus, guh back dung a St Thomas fi guh back guh plant pak choi ... when yu si di clang and the click if yu think yu bad flip.' Gaza Beating Stick [Popcaan Diss] by Blak Ryno promo DL Link : Gaza Beating Stick The WEEKEND STAR contacted Black Ryno and according to the artiste Popcaan threw lyrical jabs at him in a recent song called Nuh Box Pon Jaw where he says, 'Badman nuh tek box pon jaw ... all now some bwoy sey dem bad and cyaah defeat wi doe ... mi have a thing wey mi walk wid, tek wey yu three points mek some bwoy haffi play zero.' According to Ryno, he knows that Popcaan is dissing him because certain things happened in Gaza that Popcaan knows about. "When I heard the song, mi know sey a me him a talk because a whole heap a thing happen inna Gaza," he said. According to Ryno, he heard that people were looking forward to seeing a face-off at Sting and he was not ruling that out. "If a artiste a style mi, mi wi run een an deal wid it ... but mi jus a gwaan watch dem now," he said. Ryno says he only answered the song to show that he was no weak fence, because Jamaicans would assume that he was a coward if he didn't. The artiste says that at Sting persons can expect the same Black Ryno and if it's war, then it's war. "Wi nuh tek long fi sic, suh if a war a war," he said. The WEEKEND STAR made several attempts to get a comment from Popcaan on the matter, but his phones went unanswered. However, sources close to the deejay said that he was busy at a video shoot. Black Ryno's song Gaza Beating Stick has not yet been officially released, and was was produced by Mark Myrie, the son of reggae/dancehall icon Buju Banton. The Tamlins are among the most respected backup singers in reggae, especially for their years of international touring in support of Peter Tosh. They have backed John Holt, Delroy Wilson, Pat Kelly, and Marcia Griffiths, among others, as well as recording on their own. Having released one unsuccessful LP in 1976, they came to prominence in the late 1970s by releasing 12" singles in Jamaica for Channel One Studios, usually covering earlier rocksteady hits such as "Hard to Confess". They gained wider attention for their notable Sly and Robbie-produced version of the Randy Newman song, "Baltimore" (1979). The arrangement on that single was notably similar to that used on Nina Simone's cover of the song, released less than a year earlier. They also cut "Go Away Dream" for the same producers, while vocalist Lara enjoyed some solo success in the early 1980s. Lara's ethereally high lead vocals bring to mind the best of '70s Philly soul music, a style they have often covered. Despite their glittering 33-year career, four leading members of the band have been declared penniless. Saxophone player Brian Travers, drummer Jimmy Brown, trumpeter Terence Oswald, known to fans as Astro, and percussionist Norman Hassan were all declared insolvent. Tax officers can now seize property belonging to the band to pay off their outstanding debts. There was a bitter bust-up over band finances which split the group following the collapse of their management company DEP International. A judge sitting at Birmingham County Court ruled that they are bankrupt. District Judge Richard Musgrave gave liquidators the green light to chase debts and royalty payments on UB40's hits including chart topping Red Red Wine at a previous hearing in July. He warned the reggae outfit they would have to pay costs in the case, believed to be in the region of £57,000. In the week that they were declared bankrupt they played a gig to fans at the pub where they first performed together in 1978. They were honoured with a special plaque at the pub where it all began for the band in 1978. Ali Campbell Former frontman Ali Campbell, a founding member of UB40, acrimoniously split from the group in 2008 following on-going wrangles over finances. Last night his spokesman said the bankruptcy court case showed Ali was right to quit the band. 'It is ironic that the very week they celebrate their first gig they have been declared bankrupt, after administration began in 2006, vindicating both Ali and Mickey Virtue's decision to leave UB40,' she said.'Ali did not personally receive an invitation to the Hare show and, as such, did not turn it down. 'He most definitely would have liked to have been invited as it is where the journey began and Ali is proud of the fact that UB40's music has been honoured.' Despite being declared bankrupt, the remaining band members are understood to be recording a new album at a studio in Redditch, Worcestershire. A fifth original member of UB40 Robin Campbell, Ali Campbell's brother, was also involved in the Birmingham County Court case although is not listed as bankrupt. UB40'S GREATEST HITS
